Turn off AEC on the Shure MXA920 and MXA901

Before using a Shure MXA920 and MXA901 with a Pleneo device hub, turn off the microphone’s echo cancellation (AEC).

Overview

The Pleneo device hub handles echo cancellation and noise reduction for the room and manages the room’s audio as a single system, which is what keeps performance consistent from room to room. If the microphone runs its own AEC as well, the two interfere with each other, and results become unpredictable, so Pleneo doesn’t support running AEC on both devices.

Turn off AEC and noise reduction on the microphone before you connect it. You can do this in Shure Designer, the recommended route, or in the microphone’s built-in web application.

What you need

  • A computer on the same network as the microphone

  • Shure Designer, or access to the microphone’s web application

  • The microphone powered on and connected to the network. If it has been used in another system, factory reset it first, as old settings can conflict with the Pleneo device hub

Option 1: Shure Designer

  1. Open Shure Designer on a computer connected to the same network as the microphone.

  2. Open your project, then open the room containing the microphone.

  3. Open the microphone’s device view. Go to the Schematic tab, or double-click the MXA920 or MXA901.

  4. Find the IntelliMix DSP signal path and locate the AEC block.

  5. Turn off AEC.

  6. In the same signal path, turn off noise reduction.

Option 2: the microphone’s web application

  1. Find the microphone’s IP address using Shure Web Device Discovery or the Shure Update Utility.

  2. Enter the IP address in a browser to open the microphone’s configuration page.

  3. Go to the IntelliMix configuration section.

  4. Turn off AEC and noise reduction.

If automatic coverage is on

With automatic coverage enabled on the MXA920, AEC and noise reduction can’t be turned off through the API, so turn them off manually in the microphone’s settings using one of the options above.

Connect the microphone

Once AEC and noise reduction are off, connect the microphone to the Pleneo device hub as usual.
